Driver of overturned dump truck dies, identified by DPD

The driver, identified as Herman Gavin Burwell, 56, of Huntsville, was transported to Decatur-Morgan Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

DECATUR, Ala. — UPDATE: Decatur Police Department have released the following statement: "On August 13, 2024, at approximately 2:10 p.m., officers with the Decatur Police Department, Decatur Fire & Rescue, and Decatur-Morgan EMS were dispatched to the area of US-31 and AL-20 in reference to a single-vehicle wreck.

Upon arrival, it appeared that a dump truck hauling gravel was traveling north on US-31 when it left the roadway and overturned. The driver, identified as Herman Gavin Burwell, 56, of Huntsville, was transported to Decatur-Morgan Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The investigation is ongoing at this time"

UPDATEDecatur Fire & Rescue shares the roadway has been cleared.

U.S. Highway 31 north to Athens at the Y is currently closed. 

Decatur Fire & Rescue share an over turned dump truck has completely blocked the road.
