Barber offers free haircuts to linemen and first responders after winter storm

Hilltop Barbershop in Limestone County is offering free haircuts and shaves to those who worked hard to serve the public during the winter storm.

LIMESTONE COUNTY, Ala. — Owner of Hilltop Barbershop, Marie Smith, lives on the outer skirts of Elkmont in Limestone County. She says the winter storm hit the area pretty badly.

"There was trees down, there was power lines broke, there was lines over the road, the roads were impassable, you could not travel on a road safely," said Smith.

The storm's path of chaos did not skip her home but a local lineman was able to help her out.

"We were out of power for about three days, we were very scared. We have dogs and we have a young child, so we were very thankful when it came back on when it did and it didn't have to last much longer," said Smith.

Because one of Smith's clients, who happens to be a lineman himself, helped her family through the winter storm, she wants to return the favor to all linemen and first responders, by offering this free service.

"I have a few clients who are linemen and first responders and they worked very hard to get our power back on and whenever we got it back on, I decided that I wanted to do something to give back and show them that their work does not go unnoticed," said Smith.

Smith turned to Facebook to spread the word about the free haircuts and shaves. Her post received a lot of attention.

Smith's Facebook post read:

"For the next 2 weeks Feb 23 - March 6 during regular business hours, I am offering free haircuts and shaves to all linemen and linemen crew members of ATHENS UTILITIES and FIRST RESPONDERS as a token of our appreciation for all the hard work during this week's storms!! THANK YOU all for all you do!! Please like and share to spread the word!"

"I was very shocked when I had that much likes and shares. I do specials during Veterans Day for free haircuts for veterans every year since I been open here and I've never had that much feedback," said Smith.

She has always enjoyed lending a helping hand but knows that offering up her skill set, could help make someone's day.

"Especially when it comes to a haircut and stuff, just small things that will help them feel good about themselves," said Smith.

Making an appointment is not necessary and the shop welcomes walk-ins during regular business hours.

"They just say 'hey, I'm with the Athens Utilities or I'm a first responder' and they can just walk on in, they don't have to make an appointment, just feel free to come in any time that's available for them during the next two weeks on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday from 9:30 to 5 and on Saturdays from 9 to 12," said Smith.

This event started today, Tuesday, February 23, and ends on Saturday, March 6
