Girl Scouts have “Cyber Challenge” to grow interest in STEM

Organizers say this is the perfect way to get young girls engaged in STEM subjects and interested in jobs of the future.

Cyber-security– just one part of a 5 trillion dollar tech trade here in the US.

With the help of a major tech company, some local girls showed they could be the future faces of the industry.

Girl Scouts of North Alabama hosted the very first “Cyber Challenge” at UAH.

Tech giant, Raytheon, sponsored the event, and Girl Scouts from all over the state came to put their cyber security skills to the test with problems, and computer programs.

Organizers say this is the perfect way to get young girls engaged in STEM subjects and interested in jobs of the future.

We spoke to Amanda Browning, a seventh grade Girl Scout in the North-Central Alabama Troop who says she learned more than she imagined she would.

Amanda says, “We love just having the people help us and learning a lot of new things. It’s been so fun seeing people who know how to do all this kind of stuff and help us learn about it…. I think I might want to become one of these people when I grow up.”

Right now, only 11 percent of the cyber security workers around the world are female.
