To flush or not to flush? Flushable wipes may do more harm than good

If you're not convinced to stop flushing these wipes, Stone says the damage could be anywhere from a simple repair to a $20,000 septic tank.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Despite being branded as flushable, some plumbers say these kinds of wipes can create sewage problems.

"You're not supposed to flush them," said H.C. Blake Co. Plumbing Manager Jacob Stone. "You know, your kid's toys are flushable but it doesn't mean that you should flush them."

Stone says rather than flushing your wipes, just throw them in the trash.

"I know it's a little disgusting but it's better than throwing them down your plumbing system," said Stone. "There's a lot of variety of things that could happen. It could stop up your lines. Stop up your toilet ."

Stone says the only thing you should be flushing down the toilet is toilet paper.

"Toilet paper will completely break down and will not do damage to your plumbing system or your field lines or your septic system," said Stone.

If you're not convinced to stop flushing these wipes, Stone says the damage could be anywhere from a simple repair to a $20,000 septic tank.
