Athens man arrested after explosives found in his home

Tip first led investigators to a pipe bomb in a ditch on Huntsville-Brownsferry Road.

LIMESTONE COUNTY, Ala. — An Athens man is behind bars after investigators found an IED and materials to manufacture these devices in his home,

According to the Limestone County Sheriff's Office, investigators received information Thursday about a possible explosive device lying in a ditch on Huntsville-Brownsferry Road. They responded along with ALEA’s Hazardous Device Team and located a live pipe bomb.

They say probably cause was developed to obtain a search warrant for the home of Rex Daniel Carter in the 13000 block of L&M Acres Drive in Athens.

During the search of the residence with ALEA’s Hazardous Device Team and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATF), investigators found another improvised explosive device along with materials used for manufacturing these devices.

Carter is charged with possession of a destructive device. He is held in the Limestone County Jail on $100,000 bond. Federal charges may be pending.
