Athens to resume curbside recycling in October

Crews will continue picking up garbage in blue recycling bins through September 24.

ATHENS, Ala. — The Athens, Alabama, Sanitation Department will resume curbside recycling pickup starting on October 4.

Crews will continue picking up garbage in blue recycling bins through September 24, after which the city says the blue bins should only contain accepted recycling products.

They say those who live west of U.S. 31 will have recycling pick-up on the first and third Mondays of a month and those who live east of U.S. 31 will have recycling pick-up on the second and fourth Mondays of a month. The city asks that residents have recycling bins out at curbs by 6 a.m.

The city asks that residents recycle the following items:

  • All newspapers and inserts
  • Paper, including regular mail, bulk business mail, office paper, school paper, paper brochures, handouts, cereal boxes, cake mix boxes, construction paper, magazines and catalogs. They ask that plastic wrappings are removed.
  • Cans, including aluminum and steel cans. They ask that all food and beverage cans be washed.
  • #1 and #1 plastic bottles
  • Corrugated cardboard. They ask that cardboard be flattened and be put inside the cart.

The city asks that residents do NOT recycle the following:

  • Garbage
  • Medical Waste
  • Glass
  • Styrofoam
  • Plastic Toys
  • Oil Containers
  • Plastic sheeting or large plastic containers
  • Clothing or fabrics
