HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — This Wednesday, April 22nd, marks 'Earth Day'. It will be 50 years the world celebrates protecting our planet.
It's also Environmental Education Week from April 20th - 24th. Although the Huntsville Botanical Garden will be closed, the garden is recommending kids to do fun outdoor activities at home.
Some activities include creating art, or writing an uplifting message about protecting our planet on your driveway using colored chalk. Huntsville Botanical Garden encourages people to share pictures of their artwork by using hashtags: #hsvgarden #arbordayathome #earthday2020
Below are links to some fun nature activities at home:
The garden will also share a new activity on its Facebook, or website. Each day will include an environmentally-themed story (with a link or online reading if you don't have the featured book in your library), fun facts you can share with your family, and activities that can be completed at home.
'Keep Alabama Beautiful' encourages people to not litter. This includes properly disposing gloves and masks after use when going to a grocery store or any other public place.
The organization is also providing free reusable trash bags to place in your car. You can contact your local 'Keep Alabama Beautiful' affiliate to get one.
The Tennessee Valley's own Alabama Public Television Personality and science educator, 'Steve Trash Rockin' Eco-Hero' says it's important to teach kids the importance of our environment.
"Here is the premise. If you give children good scientific information about the environment they can make really good decisions when they're grown ups," he says.
