MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Get that rod and reel out, and get ready for Alabama's annual Free Fishing Day! On Saturday, June 13, you'll be able to fish for free in most of the state's freshwater and saltwater. And that's for everybody, Alabama residents and visitors from out of state. It's all part of celebrating National Fishing and Boating Week, which runs June 6-14.

There are only a few exceptions. State Public Fishing Lakes will still require that you have a fishing permit.

And if you're fishing for red snapper (the season is here!), you'll need a $10 Gulf Reef Fish Endorsement and a free saltwater angler registration.

Why is all this a big deal? The other 364 days (365 this year), everyone 16-64 years old who fishes with a rod and reel, hook and line, or from a boat in public waters, needs a fishing license. This year, that costs $13.85 for an annual freshwater license and $24.35 for saltwater. The season runs September 1-August 31.

“This is the perfect opportunity for non-anglers to test the fishing waters and to remind former anglers of all the fun they’ve been missing,” said Chris Blankenship, Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR). “It’s also a day for kids to learn how fun and exciting fishing is, while giving families a chance to do something together outdoors.”

And wherever you go, keep in mind Alabama's current State Healthy Order. ADCNR officials remind you to practice CDC recommendations regarding hand washing and social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.
