Huntsville welcomes glass recycling to the city.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Starting in November, Phoenix Glass Recycling will kickstart a new program where they pick up your old glass bottles from your doorstep.

Phoenix charges residential homes $11 per month, and commercial businesses, $48 per month to pickup old glass.

Use this link to add your address to the pickup list.

The owner of Phoenix Glass Recycling, Moriah Fordham explains, "So that small fee is going to help with hauling and processing costs, because glass recycling isn't cheap which is the reason why it hasn't been successful here in Huntsville."

Here are a list of acceptable items:

  • Wine, liquor, juice, and beer bottles of any size or shape.
  • Jars of any kind (jelly, pickles, sauces, olives, etc.)
  • Essential oil or perfume and similar bottles
  • Candle jars (please clean most of the unused wax out)
  • Broken or chipped containers (any listed above)

Phoenix asks that you remove all the lids from the above items. Painted items are accepted.

Rejected Items:

  • Pyrex (or similar)
  • Bakeware
  • Dishware
  • Windows
  • Mirrors
  • Light bulbs
  • Plate glass or any other type of construction or auto glass

For the second time this year, volunteers gathered for a free glass collection event hosted by Phoenix.

"So this is a unique glass recycling event here in Madison County," Fordham said. "We're collecting glass for free today but that's not typically going to be the case for Phoenix."
