MADISON COUNTY, ALABAMA, Ala. — The Madison County Sheriff's Office identified the man they say killed Terran Burt, 21.
Michael Tyrone Wheeler, 29, was originally in jail for assault and is now charged with first-degree murder.
The Madison County Sheriff's Office made the announcement at a press conference Wednesday morning. Sheriff Kevin Turner says Wheeler and Burt got into a brief fight inside the Madison County Jail on Friday, resulting in Burt's death. Click here for more information.
Sheriff Turner says Burt's brother, who is also an inmate at the jail, is being held in an isolation cell until they determine if there is a threat for his safety.
The sheriff's office does not suspect the murder is gang related.
Sheriff Turner says it's hard to conduct an investigation in a jail. He credits investigators and inmates for stepping up to tell the truth.
The investigation is being turned over to the District Attorney's Office.
