A wounded veteran is getting some major updates and repairs to his home, thanks to the help of some local groups. Bearded Warriors and Home Depot are partnering up on a Celebration of Service project for Matthew Akin, who was wounded while serving in 2014. The work is made possible through a $25,000 grant.
Thursday morning, over 100 volunteers worked on the property — trimming trees, painting the house, landscaping, and adding a new front porch, among other updates.
“It’s a bit emotional honestly for all these people to come out for one cause, and who am I? Just one guy,” said Akin. “They showed up and stepped up and wanted to help out, and I think it’s absolutely fantastic.”
“It’s about showing him that even though he has been out of the service and is no longer serving his country, there are obviously a hundred or so people and organizations that are here willing to serve him to say thank you for what he has done.”
Four men Akin served with were also flown in as a surprise.

Work on the property will continue through tomorrow.
Akin lives with his family in Union Grove.
Semper Fi Fund, Marco’s Pizza, Starbucks, Scott’s Mulch Associated Builders and Contractors, Rick and Ball Restoration, and Eagle Rising Designs also supported the project.
