The Jackson County Board of Education held a presentation today on closing Paint Rock Valley High School.
Jackson County Superintendent Kevin Dukes says keeping Paint Rock Valley open is hurting opportunities students can get at other district schools.
Dukes says attendance at Paint Rock has declined. Enrollment during during the 2005-2006 school year was 148. Current school year enrollment is at 79, down from 93 last year.
He adds if the school does not close, other schools will have to put their wants on hold because more capital is needed at Paint Rock.
Parents tell us that the district is already not investing in the school.
They are are also concerned about transportation to nearby schools, saying some students already have an hour trip from the bus stop to school.
Jackson County Schools will hold another presentation a week from today, Tuesday, April 25 at 6pm.
The board will vote on the district’s proposal to close Paint Rock Valley High School next Thursday, April 27 at 1pm.
