Alabama climbs 2 spots in latest AP poll, but CFP rankings will be more telling

Many analysts still believe Alabama will just miss the field of 12 for the College Football Playoffs.

NEW YORK — The Alabama Crimson Tide inched its way up to the 11th spot in the new AP Top 25 football poll, released Sunday afternoon.

The Tide climbed past Miami and Clemson -- both of whom lost on Saturday -- though it's unclear whether Alabama can parlay its AP poll gains into a spot in the College Football Playoffs.

Alabama defeated rival Auburn 28-14 in the annual Iron Bowl showdown between the in-state rivals.

The team's CFP fate may hinge in part on where the University of Miami lands in Tuesday's rankings. Miami (10-2) has fewer losses, but did not beat a ranked team, while Alabama defeated four ranked opponents.

The Hurricanes are three spots below the Tide in the AP poll.

A Clemson win in the ACC Championship game could also be bad news for Alabama, as it could send both Clemson and runner-up SMU to the playoff -- at the Crimson Tide's expense.

Undefeated Oregon (12-0) sits atop the latest rankings, followed by Texas (11-1), Penn State (11-1), Notre Dame (11-1), and Georgia (10-2).

Tennessee moved up one spot, going from No. 7 to No. 6 on Sunday afternoon, following their crucial victory against Vanderbilt.

The Vols took down the Commodores, 36-23 in a hard-fought game. The win greatly increases their chances of being seen again in the playoffs.

Here are the top 25 teams with their rankings and records:
