FLORENCE, Ala. — In a thrilling semifinal playoff matchup, the Mars Hill Panthers triumphed over the Piedmont Bulldogs with a decisive 49-20 victory, earning their spot in the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) 3A football championship.
The game showcased explosive offensive plays and solid defensive stops that propelled the Panthers to the win.
The game began with Mars Hill receiving the opening kickoff. Early on, the Panthers demonstrated their offensive power with a strong run from Caden Chandler, who broke free for a significant gain to secure a first down. However, on their next drive, Mars Hill faced a critical 4th down and was unable to convert, turning the ball over on downs to the Bulldogs.
Piedmont seized the opportunity, with Rollie Pinto catching a short pass and racing for extra yards. The Bulldogs' drive culminated in a touchdown as Pinto found the end zone after a solid run, giving Piedmont a 7-0 lead.
Mars Hill quickly responded, with Hudson Higgins and Chandler powering the Panthers’ offense. Chandler’s determined running helped move the Panthers into scoring position. In the second quarter, Chandler punched it into the end zone for a touchdown, tying the game at 7-7.
The Panthers continued to dominate as Chandler, finding running lanes, broke off several long runs. He reached the end zone once again for his second touchdown of the night, giving Mars Hill a 14-7 lead. As halftime approached, Chandler wasn’t finished—he added a third touchdown, completing a first-half hat trick and sending Mars Hill into the locker room with a 21-7 advantage.
In the second half, Mars Hill continued to capitalize on its momentum. Despite a strong effort from Piedmont, the Panthers’ defense kept the Bulldogs at bay, while Chandler and his teammates extended the lead. The Panthers ultimately finished strong, securing a 49-20 win and a berth in the 3A championship game, set for December 5 in Birmingham.
