HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Construction crews have left John Hunt Park, site of the first-ever South Star Music Festival. While there are no longer crowd barricades, porta-potties, or staging materials, one big and unwanted feature remains - the muddy mess left behind.
An inundation of rainfall and heavy foot traffic from the first day of what was supposed to be a weekend-long festival led to a mud pit. The slimy, sludgy mess one attendee likened to "walking through a warm Frosty" led organizers and city officials to cancel the second day of the festival.
Monday morning, construction workers waded through the mud and the muck to begin breaking down the hardware. Between that and motorized heavy equipment - tractors, trailers, and the like - the field looks even more like what one might find at a rodeo or cattle show.
Despite the onslaught of mud, city officials say John Hunt Park did not sustain any long-term damage and they are eager to see South Star return for a 2025 festival.
It's not known how long it will take to see the field return to a grassy, green hue.
