Albertville's Exceptional Aggie Café: Empowering students with disabilities for life beyond high school

Through a partnership between the Albertville school system and a nonprofit organization, students gain real-world experience in a supportive environment.

ALBERTVILLE, Ala. — Living with a disability presents many challenges, and one of the most significant hurdles is securing meaningful employment. However, Albertville City Schools is working to change that by offering students with intellectual disabilities an opportunity to develop valuable job skills through the Exceptional Aggie Café—a program that combines hands-on experience with the support they need to thrive after high school.

The café, which opened its doors two years ago, serves as a training hub where students gain practical experience in food preparation, customer service, and other essential skills needed for life in the workforce. The school system sponsors the initiative, providing transportation, teaching staff, and a unique environment where students can apply what they’ve learned in the classroom to real-world situations.

“This is my third year at the café, and it’s the greatest thing ever,” said Special Education Transition Coach Keena Cahela. “It provides them a wonderful opportunity to get ready for life after high school.”

For many students, the café is more than just a place to work; it’s a stepping stone toward a brighter future. Jose, known as the "Wrap Master," is one of the students who has embraced the program. Though he’s a man of few words, his skills in making wraps—whether turkey, ham, or veggie-based—speak for themselves.

"Students are trained in the classroom for academics, but this is a great place where academics and real-world skills come together," explained Cahela. "We've seen our students gain confidence, improve their social skills, and independence skills."

Cahela says parents who are struggling to help their children decide where to go after their schooling ends might find this program of use to them.

The Exceptional Aggie Café isn’t just a training center—it’s also a popular lunch spot for the community. Open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at LifePoint Church on Motley Street, the café offers a wide range of menu items, from hot dogs to mouthwatering desserts.

But it’s not just the food that makes the café special; it’s the opportunity it gives students to excel.
