Florence, Alabama – The Florence Tree Commission and Mayor Steve Holt are honored to announce that the City of Florence has been named a “Tree City USA” for the 33rd year.

You are invited to join in the celebration on Thursday, February 27, 2020, at 10:00 am at the Florence-Lauderdale Public Library. In celebration of Arbor Day, the Florence Tree Commission will give away 100 white dogwood trees to the first hundred participants.

“Achieving the “Tree City USA” distinction for 33 years by the National Arbor Day Foundation is a commendable accomplishment and shows our dedication,” said Dave Smith, Florence Tree Commission Chair. The effort requires cooperation between the Florence Street, Electricity, and Parks and Recreation Departments, Florence Housing Authority, Mayor Steve Holt and Florence City Council, Florence Tree Commission, and Urban Forestry.

As a part of the celebration, an Arbor Day Poster Contest was held with the fifth-grade classes at Kilby Laboratory School and Hibbett Middle School. The Florence Tree Commission has selected the top five student poster entries. These posters are currently displayed in the FlorenceLauderdale Public Library Youth Services.

  • First Place Raynie Haddock, Hibbett
  • Second Place Selvin Galvez, Hibbett
  • Third Place Stokley Beth Raney, Kilby
  • Honorable Mention: Ella Marie Clayton, Kilby
  • Honorable Mention: Aysia Turner, Hibbett

“Thank you, Florence Tree Commission, for all of your hard work and dedication. We are proud to be a Tree City USA! Congratulation to all of the Arbor Day poster contest winners. We hope you consider serving on the Tree Commission in the future,” Mayor Steve Holt.
