UPDATE- We now know more about the child who deputies say was accidentally shot and killed Sunday afternoon.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office says they believe the five-year-old accidentally shot themselves in the head.
They say it happened in an unoccupied car that was parked in the driveway on Berry Creek Drive in Harvest. The child was found by a parent and was taken by ambulance to the hospital in Madison where they were pronounced dead.
The Sheriff’s Office says they are investigating, but say no charges are expected.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the accidental shooting death of a child.
HEMSI confirmed they received a call around 2:45 p.m. Sunday afternoon that a child had been shot. They arrived at a residence on Berrycreek Drive near Sam Thomas Road and transported the child to the Madison ER.
Authorities say the child is under the age of 12.
Madison County Schools released this statement:
The child involved in the accidental shooting Sunday was a student in our system. First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with this family and our entire Madison County School family. Because of student privacy, we will not be naming the school where this student attended. However, we are providing counselors to staff at the school who might need someone to talk with following this tragedy. We also are not at liberty to discuss any details about this situation since it is actively being investigated by the Madison County Sheriff’s Department.
