HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — A chapter of a service fraternity has been barred from Alabama A&M University by its national council because of hazing allegations.
News outlets report the National Council of Kappa Kappa Psi sent a letter to its members stating they are revoking the charter of the Iota Nu chapter at the university.
The letter says the revocation is a result of “hazing related” to the New Member Presentation Show. The nature of the hazing wasn’t immediately released.
The letter says all active members of the fraternity are expelled and there’s a 20-year moratorium on any Kappa Kappa Psi chapters at the school.
Kappa Kappa Psi supports the university’s Marching Maroon and White band.
On Wednesday, Nov. 6, the university released a statement regarding the fraternity’s suspension:
Alabama A&M University received notification from Kappa Kappa Psi Fraternity, Inc. on Tuesday, November 5th, that the institution’s undergraduate chapter has been suspended due to accusations of hazing. Prior to this notification, the University was not made aware of any hazing violations by our students, faculty, staff, or alumni.
We are having internal dialogue with student members of Kappa Kappa Psi, as well as faculty and staff who may advise or provide support to the campus chapter. The University is also reaching out to the corporate office of Kappa Kappa Psi to determine the alleged details surrounding this decision and the parties involved.
Although there were no prior reports of hazing to University officials, Alabama A&M has zero tolerance for hazing within any of our student groups or organizations.”
