Friday night a jury found House Speaker Mike Hubbard guilty on 12 of 23 ethics charges.

Due to Friday’s verdict Hubbard is immediately removed from office. This means a special election will be called to fill his seat.

Soon after many Alabama leaders sent out their reaction to the media.

Current acting speaker of the house Victor Gaston made a statement Friday night, saying:

“This incident, no matter how regrettable offers strong proof  that the  ethics reforms passed by the Legislature in 2010 remain among the toughest in the nation.”

Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange also sent a statement to the media out Friday night. He commended the work of the public corruption unit:

“I’m very proud of their work. This should send a clear message that in Alabama we hold public officials accountable for their action.”
