8th grader arrested for attempting to bring guns to McNair Junior High

An 8th-grade student was arrested at McNair Junior High for bringing multiple firearms to school on Wednesday.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — An 8th-grade student was arrested Tuesday morning after bringing multiple firearms to McNair Junior High School, according to Huntsville City Schools officials.

Campus security found the weapons during the school’s morning check using a weapon detection system. Inside the backpack, two handguns were found. School officials said the student was quickly stopped and taken off campus.

According to Huntsville Police, the student was arrested for being a minor in possession of a handgun. Due to the student's age, authorities cannot release further details about the student.

Following the incident, McNair Junior High implemented additional security measures but continued its normal schedule. In a statement to parents, school officials urged families to ensure that children do not have access to firearms at home and to check their backpacks before school.

Here is the full statement released from the school:

"Dear McNair families and staff,

Please be advised that an 8th grade student is in police custody after attempting to bring multiple firearms into the school building this morning.

Our campus security team discovered the weapons during our morning screening process with our weapon detection system. Upon discovering the items, the student was stopped immediately without incident. Law enforcement removed the student from campus, and the student involved will not be returning to school as attempting to bring weapons to campus carries serious disciplinary consequences.

Additional security will be on-hand throughout the day as we proceed with a normal schedule and follow all safety protocols to promote a safe learning environment. We ask for your continued support in ensuring students are unable to access weapons at home and checking your child’s backpack before they leave for school. Additionally, please speak with your student about the importance of “see something, say something” to report any concerns to a teacher or administrator.

Thank you for your support.

Very respectfully,

McNair Administration"
