BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Three people are dead and four Birmingham police officers are injured on Sunday after a shooting led to a shootout between officers and a suspect.
Police say officers responded to the 1000 block of Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd. at around 6:30 a.m. regarding reports of a shooting.
Upon arrival, officers located a woman lying in the street suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The woman was transported to a nearby hospital where police say she later died.
Police say they also located a man who was unresponsive sitting on a sidewalk. He was later pronounced dead.
An investigation led police to an apartment in the 1000 block of 18th Street South where a tactical unit was requested to execute a search warrant. Upon entering the apartment, officers were immediately met with gunfire, according to Birmingham police.
The responding officers returned gunfire, shooting and killing the suspect, police say. Four officers were injured in the exchange: Two officers suffered gunshot wounds and two others were grazed by bullets. The Birmingham Police Department said all four officers are expected to make a full recovery.
Police say these events appear to have stemmed from a dispute over a dog.
The investigation has been turned over to the Alabama State Bureau of Investigation.
