UPDATE: Final escaped Cullman County inmate back in custody; Hanceville resident held fugitive for police

Leo Chavez, the last of the four Cullman County Jail escapees, has been captured.

CULLMAN COUNTY, Ala. —

UPDATE:

The Cullman County Sheriff's Office announced that the final Cullman County Jail escapee on the loose, Leo Chavez, has been captured.

Within 24 hours of their escape, all four fugitives from the jail were back behind bars. Leo Chavez was the last person caught after a search that involved deputies on foot and helicopter assistance.

Hanceville resident Lawrence Baker saw Chavez and held him until officers arrived.

Chavez was in jail after being convicted of murdering his parents. He was awaiting transfer to state prison.

Three of the four inmates who escaped from the Cullman County Jail are back in custody. The remaining inmate, Leo Chavez remains at large.

The Cullman County Sheriff's Office released this update:

After a multi-agency vehicle pursuit, Robert Alan Peak has been captured and taken into custody. The pursuit began in Blount County where Peak attempted to run in a stolen vehicle. The pursuit came through Blount County into Cullman County and was ended on Hwy 278 near Berlin. 

Chavez remains at large at this time. The Cullman County Sheriff’s Office and supporting agencies are continuing their efforts in the search for Chavez.

Sheriff Matt Gentry has stated that he will offer an additional $5000 reward for information that leads to the capture of Leo Chavez. This matches the US Marshal Service’s reward of $5000, for a total of $10,000.

PREVIOUS STORY:

Four inmates escaped from the Cullman County Jail on March 18, the Cullman County Sheriff's Office said.

Two of the escaped inmates are in custody and officials are still searching for the other two.

The Cullman County Sheriff's Office identified the two as Leo Chavez and Robert Alan Peak. The U.S. Marshal Service is offering a $5,000 reward for Chavez and a $2,500 reward for Peak.

The Cullman County Sheriff's Office says to stay inside and lock your doors. If you see the subjects, call 911 or the Cullman County Sheriff's Office at 256-734-0342.

The subjects were last seen east of the jail, CCSO said.
