MORGAN COUNTY, Ala. — A former bookeeper at West Morgan Elementary School has been arrested for theft after she allegedly used the school's line of credit with multiple vendors to make fraudulent/unauthorized purchases under the School Board's Tax ID.

Shelley Allison Rhodes, 47 of Decatur, was arrested and charged with 1st Degree Theft.

Morgan County Schools are currently conducting an audit, but they believe the total loss in funds is expected to be over $75,000.

The Morgan County Schools Chief Schools Financial Officer reported the theft to the Morgan County Sheriff's Office Tuesday, March 3.

Morgan County Schools released a statement Wednesday afternoon:

"The individual in question was an employee of our school system, as a bookkeeper, and resigned. We became aware of this situation as a result of the processes we keep in place. We are cooperating with the Morgan County Sheriff Department and since this is an active investigation, all other questions should be directed toward the Morgan County Sheriff's Department."
