DECATUR, Ala. — A Morgan County Circuit Court judge on Wednesday cleared the way for the trial of a man charged in what has become known as the "Seven Deadly Sins murders."
Judge Stephen F. Brown reviewed mental health evaluations for the defendant, John Legg, and concluded that Legg is fit to be tried for the killings of seven people at a home in Valhermoso Springs in June 2020.
Legg and another man, Frederic Rogers, were arrested weeks later in Oregon, following a traffic stop. They were indicted in 2021.
Rogers was convicted on four counts of Capital Murder in August of this year and was sentenced to life in prison.
Legg's attorneys have argued that their client is mentally ill and unfit for trial. A Court-ordered evaluation by JBS Mental Health was the basis for Brown's decision, which allows the case to move forward.
Brown set a status conference for Jan. 13, at which time a trial date will be set.
His order indicates the case should proceed without "unnecessary delay."
Rogers and Legg both belonged to a biker gang named "Seven Deadly Sins." Investigators said their victims were shot multiple times, along with a dog found at the same home.
The victims were identified as Valhermoso Springs residents Tammy England Muzzey, 45; Emily Brooke Payne, 21; and Dakota Green, 17; Roger Lee Jones Jr., 19, of Decatur; Jeramy Wade Roberts, 31, of Athens, and William Zane Hodgin, 18, of Somerville.
