DECATUR, Ala. — For one teacher in Decatur, art is where her heart is and it shows. Just take a look at some of the work of her students!
Meet this week's FOX54 Top Teacher from Decatur Middle School, Tajwana Johnson!
Johnson has been teaching art for six years, three of those at Decatur Middle School. She loves to share her God-given talent with her students, and her kids love her for it.
Seventh-grader, Anna Hampton, believes art is her life, and that's thanks to Mrs. Johnson. " I love Ms. Johnson. Ms. Johnson is the best teacher. It's the best period. When I'm at home I don't want to do [anything] else but draw or paint. It's the creativity that comes to your mind and you just started drawing stuff, and even if you just draw something, you add something else to it."
Makenya Duniga, another student of Johnson's, believes art is what she's done all her life. "I've been doing art since I was in like probably pre-K and I've gotten an art award three times."
Johnson says teaching goes beyond the classroom. Her principal, Brad Newton, has seen it first-hand. "Not only does she do a good job as a teacher here in the classroom, but she also is a sponsor for one of our mentorship groups here for our young ladies."
The group is called 'Leading Ladies'. Johnson says, "I have a group called leading ladies and it's just I just give them help them with basic life skills. I have people come out and speak to them."
Johnson believes it's her duty to inspire the next generation of artists. "I just feel like children are the next ones to be adults. So, if we teach them [and] pour [kindness] and love into them, they'll be able to give it back to us one day."
