ATHENS, Ala. — This week's FOX54 News Top Teacher is someone people say is special, and the way she treats her students is with TLC. She also has a bit of grit, prepping her student for the real world. Meet Charity Rogers from Athens High School.
Rogers has been teaching for 20 years and at Athens High School for two years. She works one-on-one with special needs students. Specifically, she's a self-contained specialist. "My unit is primarily children with autism or they have a lower IQ." There are four teachers like her in Athens City Schools.
Rogers works with different types of special needs students. "We work with the students that have multiple physical needs, multiple emotional needs, multiple cognitive need or a variation of all of those fit together. And that's what I do."
She says that a day in the life of her classroom is functioning chaos, but the chaos us her calling. "So my mom is a special needs teacher. My oldest is a special needs student." And her students' learning goes on outside her classroom. "They do go out to classes with their typical peers. They are with me for their core academics. We do a life skills class. As the world progresses, we are becoming a more inclusive society. And I expect my students to leave me knowing how to function in that world."
