HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Some people say his excitement for math and his warm heart are what motivates his students. To him, math is more than a subject, but a game. Meet this week's top teacher, Rico Moore from the Academy for Academics and Arts in Huntsville!
Spend a day in Rico Moore's class, and you'll soon learn that there's more to math than meets the eye. He's had a superpower for some twenty-three years, three of those years, a specialty in math.
But that superpower wasn't always there. "I failed fifth grade. I dropped out of high school. I dropped out of college."
It took super heroes to help. He says, ""One of the struggles I did have was reading. What got me into reading was comics. You know, I lost myself in the comics."
His love for comics turned into a love for teaching kids how to defeat that villain called math. "I'll let them know that math is a game, as if you just know the rules because math does have rules. Just become the best player."
I asked Moore if students believe he's a super hero. He says it's more important that he believes in them. "I think that's the greatest power you can have, they don't care how smart I am or if I know math, because Lord knows I always make mistakes with them. What they care about is that they know I believe in them."
