Family, friends honor fallen cyclist on his birthday

Family and dozens of bikers who were friends to Jose Zayas, rode out on what would've been his 37th birthday.

MOORESVILLE, Ala. — Dozens of bikers rode out to honor one of their own in Mooresville. Jose Zayas was struck and killed last October by a drunk driver. Bikers rode close to 37 miles, the age he would've been on Sunday.

"It would have been his 37th birthday," said his older sister Delineliz Zayas.

Family and friends of Zayas met at Southern Carnage to begin the route. They later stopped at the marker where he was killed near the intersection of Boeing Blvd SW and Wall Triana Highway to stop for a moment of silence and release balloons in his memory.

The route finished at Java Coffee Shop where proceeds were given to the 'Ride On, Zayas Foundation' started by his family. The foundation promotes bike safety on the road here in the Valley.

"He was hit by the DUI. We are also going to promote if you drink, don't drive. Don't drive distracted and be safe," said Delineliz.

Zayas' family say he was loved by the people who knew him, and were happy to see the support.

"The cycling community loved him so much that they came up with the event to celebrate his life and making a memory ride on his name," said Delineliz.

"It's a great feeling having the cyclist support, especially since Zayas was promoting the awareness of safety roads for the cyclists. This is something I'm sure, he's happy. He's happy. He's proud," added Delineliz.

According to Alabama Crash Facts, there were 6 bicycle fatalities and 212 bicyclist injuries in 2017.

Alabama law requires a 3 feet minimum distance between vehicles and bicyclists on the road.
