Alabama baseball coach Greg Goff has been fired after one season following his reported attempt to revoke scholarships for a number of players.

Goff was fired Wednesday after he tried to reduce or take away scholarships for as many as 10 players at the end of the season, according to the Tuscaloosa News’ Ben Jones. Such an action would constitute a violation of NCAA rules.

Players were reportedly told about Goff’s firing during a team meeting at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

Under legislation passed in January 2015, athletic programs in the Power 5, which includes the SEC, have to renew athletic scholarships annually. Athletic scholarships from Power 5 programs can’t be revoked for athletic reasons. Goff previously coached at Louisiana Tech, which is not in the Power 5 and isn’t subject to that rule.

New Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne told the Tuscaloosa News earlier this week that the school would not be taking away scholarships.

Alabama had signed Goff to a five-year deal in 2016. The Crimson Tide went 19-34-1 this season and failed to qualify for the 2017 SEC Baseball Tournament.
