The sheriff's office said Lt. Jeff Bain died overnight due to complications caused by the coronavirus.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ala. — A lieutenant with the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office has died from complications due to COVID-19, the office confirmed to WZDX on January 4.

The sheriff's office said Lt. Jeff Bain died overnight due to complications caused by the coronavirus.

CASA of North Sand Mountain, an organization that supports children in the welfare system, said that Lt. Bain played a critical roll in the CASA Closet for Children oranization.

"Mr. Bain unknowingly brought a glimpse of hope to many children in Dekalb and Jackson counties. The closet was created to provide children with clothing, shoes, diapers, wipes etc. Mr. Bain organized for the closet to be painted and shelving that was donated by the Dekalb County Sheriff's Office to be installed," CASA of North Sand Mountain said in a Facebook post.

The CASA Closet for Children will be renamed in Lt. Bain's honor, the organization said.

Funeral and service arrangements have not been announced as of 3:30 p.m. on January 4.

The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office's front lobby is closed as of January 4 and plans to reopen on January 11. Pistol permits may still be renewed online on the sheriff's office's website.
