HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — This pandemic has made it a real struggle for so many families to keep food on the table.
The Food Bank of North Alabama have seen first-hand plenty of people in need.
"We definitely saw an increase in people who need help from food assistance," says Food Bank of North Alabama Executive Director, Shirley Schofield.
Schofield says they've helped several groups.
"We've seen as high as 20-21-22 groups come in, in one day. It just kind of varies, but we've had kind of a lull and now it's starting to pick up again," says Schofield.
The types of donations vary on a day to day basis. On Monday there was a good amount of canned goods and pantry items in stock.
"We do kind of pride ourselves on being a distribution center. It comes in and goes out very quickly, we turn it over very fast. We don't want to just be a warehouse that's just housing food," added Schofield.
On Monday, the food bank also began distributing additional donations that were milk and produce from Publix. They received the donations last Friday.
They also have now given out more than 34,000 mobile meals and they say they expect this need to continue.
"We know there's still going to be a lot of need out there in the months to come, well after this crisis has been contained. So we're definitely making sure that we have funds and we have food available to the community," added Schofield.
The Food Bank of North Alabama is always looking for monetary donations. Right now they're nearly at $1-million mark, their goal is to reach $2 million.
