HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — As the economy reopens, the virus still remains to be a threat. People are also cautious about leaving their homes.
WZDX News spoke with Huntsville Hospital Infectious Disease Specialist, Dr. Ali Hassoun, MD on where we go from here.
"The main issue, and it's always been the same, 'Is our community going to help us out in following what's recommended?" says Hassoun.
Since the economy has reopened, there's been an increase of infected people.
"I'm hoping we're not going to see significant rise, but at the moment we do see some. Compared to about a week - 10 days ago. We've seen some here and there numbers even at our hospital," says Dr. Hassoun.
Hassoun says the outcome of this virus depends on the community's actions.
"If they go out with the physical distance and hand hygiene, I can guarantee you this is going to prevent higher number of deaths in comparison to what we can do at the hospital. It makes a lot of difference," added Hassoun.
Some people say they're not in a rush to go to certain public places and will mostly be at home.
"I'm just going to wait til June 'til things die down a little bit and people are not so excited to be out," says Jasmine Bacon.
Others believe being physically distant helps also.
"Continue to stay social, but physically - keep your distance," says Lindsay Cunningham and Shelby Stines.
Dr. Hassoun says there's also been a debate on when and where people should wear masks.
"The trick is if you cannot maintain that physical distance, you better put a mask on," added Hassoun.
Public health officials still recommend people to be six feet apart and wear masks or face coverings while in public.
