HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Wearing a mask has become a part of our everyday lives, but have you ever heard of 'Maskne'?
Skin care experts, such as Dr. Kathleen Hesterman from Northeast Alabama Dermatology, says it's acne from a face mask. It can be caused by friction, pressure and just constantly covering your face.
Advanced Life Clinic - Dermatology Division based in Huntsville reports a ten percent increase in patients because of 'Maskne'.
To help with this, you should wash your fabric mask daily, change the disposable ones as often as possible, and remove the mask completely instead of dangling it from your ear.
"Take it completely off, because when you think about it, that mask is there. The bacteria is sitting now on your chin. So not only do you have acne around your mouth but you can also get it down on your chin. So just remove it all the way, and then put it back on," says Advanced Life Clinic Aesthetician, Lila King.
Skin care experts also suggest to avoid touching your face when you take off your mask.
Here's more info from Dr. Hesterman below:
What is maskne?
Maskne is acne related to wearing a face mask caused by friction, pressure and simply being constantly covered up. Makeup, oil and sweat are trapped on the skin, blocking pores which eventually leads to acne.
Do certain mask fabrics cause acne?
No. Typically ill-fitting masks that rub the skin or used masks that have trapped sweat, makeup and oil contribute more to maskne than choice of fabric.
Does makeup or facial hair cause maskne?
Makeup definitely contributes to acne because it can easily get trapped in your pores and clog them. As much as possible, minimize makeup under masks.
What are some tips to avoid maskne?
Wash your fabric mask daily and change your disposable mask as frequently as possible. Use a gentle cleanser and moisturize twice daily. If you are considering medication, Differin gel is one over the counter treatment that can be effective. Always consider contacting your board-certified dermatologist for more specific treatment plans and advice.
Are there certain things I should or should not put on my face while wearing a mask?Avoid wearing makeup. Use gentle skin care products to decrease irritation. Look for a moisturizer with ceramides, hyaluronic acid and/or glycerin. Avoid touching your face when taking masks on and off.
