DECATUR, Ala. — Churches have reopened, but challenges still lie ahead. People behind the pulpit and in the pew are adjusting to social distancing.
It's been one week since the Decatur Church of Christ have opened its doors to the congregation. Leaders say they're trying to fellowship and socialize while social distancing.
"I've talked to several people who have really been looking forward to it and they're all excited that we're back, and so it's kind of nice," says Decatur Church of Christ Preacher, Alan Watkins.
Watkins and the congregation are back together this time under different circumstances. This Sunday marked communion. Instead of passing the plate, the congregation picked up their cups on the way to the pew.
There's also arranged seating for social distancing. "I came in here a couple of weeks ago and took some painter's tape and marked on the pews where people could sit," says Watkins.
Members of the church say it feels great to be back even with these changes in place.
"What it does for people is it recharges the battery from a spiritual standpoint when you can be together," says Daniel Hall.
"We're a family. This is a family that we're here with, and it's good to see familiar faces even with masks. You really miss out on it," added Jon Vandiver.
Watkins says the congregation is dismissed starting from the back row on up. Members also give offering on the way out.
Watkins says although they are working on a system, it's still challenging.
"I'm looking forward to getting back to a full schedule of you know, Sunday School, Sunday night, Wednesday night services, but that's at least going to be another month, I'm sure."
"We're trying to congregate while congregating, and that's difficult," added Watkins.
Decatur Church of Christ is doing drive-in worship services in the evenings. WZDX News reached out to other Tennessee Valley churches and some will remain closed and reopen when it's safe to do so.
