UAB doctors say next two weeks are crucial to contain Covid spread

We have been warned all year that the winter months could bring a surge of Covid cases, and doctors at UAB say it is crucial that we act now.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — They say cooler weather and more people gathering inside increases the risk for Covid transmission.

They believe the October increase we saw could be in part do to k through 12 school activities.

Doctors in Birmingham say what we do now sets us up for the rest of the year and beyond.

"Basically what happens in the next two weeks really, truly matters for how we will spend the first part of 2021, and possibly even the end of 2021. Cases that are occurring right now are cases that could be taken home at Thanksgiving, when people get together with family and friends. Thanksgiving is a particularly problematic holiday, because the basic premises is that we get together inside and we share a meal together, and we have a good time around the table with family and friends."

Doctor Judd says we have seen our statewide positivity rate surge in the last two to three weeks.

She says they like to see the positivity rate below 10% and as we said earlier - right now Alabama's is just under 20%.
