COVID-19 vaccine planned to arrive in North Alabama

Health care leaders across the state are finalizing plans to roll out the COVID vaccine. First to healthcare workers, and later to the rest of the community.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — "I feel like Paul Revere now, the vaccine is coming, the vaccine is coming," said Judy Smith, Public Health Administrator for Alabama Department of Public Health.

And it is... quickly. When it comes to planning, Smith says there's a plan that consists of four G's

"Currently, as far as our vaccine plan goes, we have a 4G club, we got to have enough vaccine. Now, we have vaccine coming in, it will come in piece mail, it is an allocation that is coming in based on population and based on where it needs to be sent across the nation. But the first G is to get the vaccine, the next G is to give the vaccine."

And the third...

"To gain people's confidence in this vaccine," said Smith.

Kelli Powers, president of Decatur Morgan Hospital offers a way to do just that.

"I have a lot of physicians that are ready to take that vaccination, so, if you're worried about taking it, I'm gonna let you know how many doctors take it and maybe have some come up here and take it on the air, Mayor. So, we can really get our community vaccinated when it is available," said Powers

"And the last one is, that we will gain our freedom again. We will gain our freedom to be able to have our Christmas parties, our Thanksgiving party, or mask burning in July or whatever we're gonna do."

The vaccine roll out is important right now because numbers of COVID cases keep on rising here in Alabama.

"Alabama will cross the 300,000 mark probably within the next day, next two days in terms of total people who have had COVID, over 244,000 of those are confirmed but in Morgan County we have reached the mark of 7,616 confirmed with an additional almost thousand probable. I will also say that we in Morgan County now have 64 deaths," said Smith.

And most can agree when it comes to COVID deaths...

"One, is one too many. One more is one too many," said Smith.
