SIDS Awareness: Create a safe sleep environment for your baby

October is SIDS Awareness Month. Learn key facts, prevention tips, and safe sleep practices to protect your baby from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — October is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Awareness Month, a time to educate parents and caregivers about the risks and preventive measures associated with SIDS.

What is SIDS?

SIDS is the sudden and unexplained death of an infant under one year old, even after thorough investigation. According to the CDC, research shows that vaccines do not cause or contribute to SIDS. This concern often arises because infants typically receive vaccinations around the same age when the risk of SIDS peaks.

Preventive Measures

To reduce the risk of SIDS, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends placing babies on their backs to sleep. This guidance, established in 1992, has significantly decreased SIDS rates since the launch of the "Back-to-Sleep" campaign in 1994.

Creating a Safe Sleep Environment

The National Institute of Health recommends a safe sleep environment for infants. Here are key tips to keep in mind:

  • Firm: The mattress should quickly return to its original shape when pressed.
  • Flat: Use a flat surface, avoiding hammocks or any incline.
  • Level: The sleep area should be even, covered only with a fitted sheet.

Parents and caregivers should ensure that babies sleep alone in a crib or bassinet, free of soft objects like pillows and blankets that can pose suffocation risks.

What Not to Include in Baby's Sleep Area

  • No soft toys, blankets, or bumpers.
  • No pillows or comforters.
  • Avoid using car seats or strollers as regular sleep spaces.
