A Huntsville student received a big surprise at school today for winning a state-wide contest.

Kaiday Barrera, a fifth grader at Whitesburg P-8 school, placed first in the State Arbor Day poster contest. Today Barrera  was surprised with the news by the superintendent, Mayor Tommy battle and her parents. This is the 19th consecutive year Huntsville City Schools has had a student place top three.

“Arbor Day poster contest and if we win first, second or third our student gets to go down to Montgomery and plant a tree on the capital ground with the governor,” said Joy McKee with Operation Green Team.

Barrera  was also presented with a check for $75 and her class won a pizza party. Nearly 1,000 posters were entered in the contest.
