23 patients, 9 employees test positive for COVID-19 at Athens Senior Recovery Center

Employees who tested positive are quarantined. Patients with the virus will be treated at the facility.

ATHENS, Alabama — There is now a COVID-19 outbreak at a nursing home in Athens.

The Limestone Health Facility Senior Rehab and Recovery Center confirmed 23 patients and 9 employees have tested positive for COVID-19.

They say the employees are quarantined and the patients will be treated at the nursing home. Patients who need extra care will be taken to the hospital for treatment.

The say once they got their first case on June 19th, they decided to test everyone at the facility causing the large spike in cases.

Senior Rehab and Recovery Center Director of Nursing, Wade Menefee, said "Since we did go ahead and test everybody, we did have some asymptomatic positives. We're still monitoring those people for any symptoms that they may have developed. Patients that have tested positive, they are receiving the appropriate medical care that they need."

They say they have taken precautions and that only visitors for patients at end of life are allowed inside the building.
