ROGERSVILLE, Ala. — A 23-year-old man was found dead at Joe Wheeler State Park on Monday afternoon, according to Lauderdale County Coroner Kim Jones.

The body is presumed to be that of David Stann, a University of Alabama at Huntsville student who has been missing since September 22. A driver’s license belonging to Stann was located in clothing on the remains.

Lauderdale County Sheriff Hamilton says Athens Police found David's car parked at the lodge in the park.

After an hour of searching, officers discovered a body in a secluded area. Sheriff Hamilton noted that the body appeared to have been there for several days and may have been scavenged by animals.

The Lauderdale County Sheriff suspects that the body is Stann's based on the location of his vehicle and a phone ping in the same area.

The body has been sent to the Alabama Department of Forensics in Huntsville for an autopsy. The cause of death remains undetermined, and the sheriff's office is still waiting for autopsy results, but there are currently no indications of foul play.

We will provide updates as more information becomes available.
