$4.4 Million Federal Grant provides free job skills training for unemployed in Alabama

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — A $4.4 million federal grant is now available for unemployed individuals in North, Southeast, and West Alabama, as announced by the Alabama Department of Labor and Department of Commerce this week. The grant is being provided by the U.S. Department of Labor

This grant is intended to for residents of specific counties in Alabama. You can see the full list of counties below. 

North Alabama:

  • Cullman
  • DeKalb
  • Franklin
  • Jackson
  • Lauderdale
  • Lawrence
  • Limestone
  • Madison
  • Marion
  • Marshall
  • Morgan
  • Winston 

West Alabama:

  • Bibb
  • Fayette
  • Greene
  • Hale
  • Lamar
  • Marengo
  • Sumter
  • Tuscaloosa
  • Pickens 

Southeast Alabama:

  • Barbour
  • Butler
  • Coffee
  • Covington
  • Crenshaw
  • Dale
  • Geneva
  • Henry
  • Houston
  • Pike 

On September 20, 2022, the Department of Labor revealed the allocation of $34.4 million to 26 grant recipients in the second round of the Workforce Opportunities for Rural Communities (WORC) program. 

This training includes various industries, like advanced manufacturing (such as auto and aerospace), healthcare, information technology, construction, and transportation, distribution, and logistics. Interested individuals can register for skills training online through the Department of Commerce Alabama Works! portal. If you would like to sign up for skills training in person, you can visit an Alabama Career Center. The locations are available on a map provided by the Alabama Department of Labor, along with a list of specific centers.
