HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Land Trust of North Alabama has been awarded a $5,000 grant by the Alabama Mountains, Rivers & Valleys Resource Conservation & Development Council, courtesy of the North Alabama Trail & Recreation Program (NATR). This grant will be used to enhance trails and other maintenance at the Cane Creek Canyon Nature Preserve in Colbert County.
Spanning 693 acres, Cane Creek Canyon Nature Preserve boasts a diverse array of plant and animal species. Located near Tuscumbia, the preserve is open to visitors from Friday to Sunday, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Originally under the care of the Lacefield family, the property was donated to the Land Trust of North Alabama in early 2023.
Volunteers are invited to help by joining scheduled workdays held throughout the year. No prior experience is necessary, but participants must be at least 18 years old. The Land Trust supplies all required tools and guidance. To sign up for upcoming workdays and volunteer opportunities, visit here.
The grant will also expand two bridges, with plans to widen walkways and incorporate ramp approaches. Approximately 100 feet of cable hand guides will be installed along steep sections of the trail to enhance safety for visitors. Additionally, the project includes the installation of two new interpretive signs, aimed at enhancing visitors' understanding of the natural environment. These planned improvements aim to enhance safety, accessibility, and educational opportunities within the preserve.
