HUNTSVILLE, Ala — "Start Here, Go Anywhere." That's the mantra of Alabama A&M, and this week, more than 2,000 freshman start their journey. It's the largest incoming class in the school's history and includes students from 35 states and seven countries.
The school, an HBCU in north Alabama A&M, says it received a record number of applications, 15,000, a 30 percent increase in applicants compared to the previous recruitment cycle. The University also saw a 16% rise in transfer applications.
“We’re excited to welcome this class to Alabama A&M University,” said President Daniel K. Wims. “With their individual strengths, backgrounds, and aspirations, these students are already making their mark on the AAMU story. We’re committed to preparing them for success in their careers and in life. Students and families are choosing Alabama A&M in record numbers because of that commitment and the return on investment realized by those who come from The Hill.”
Freshman Jay Mayes is excited for the opportunity. "[I'm] blessed to have the opportunity to be a part of one of the biggest class, one of the biggest freshman class at AAMU, and it makes me feel like I'm already a part of history, and I just got here."
Jaeden Cleveland, also a freshman, says, "My classes are, they're going great actually. The professor, she's she's very kind, very welcoming."
And new student Jaylon Todd is looking forward to everything Alabama A&M has to offer. "Oh, I know it's going to be so fun. Like the football games, all the sports. I'm going to be there."
“This moment of history is just a starting point,” said Vice President of Student Affairs Braque Talley. “Our admissions staff, alumni, and entire University community have rallied behind this accomplishment. That’s added motivation for our entire team to go out and make history again.”
