Alabama Faces Blood Shortages: LifeSouth urges community to donate

For the All-American Donor Days running from July 1-6, LifeSouth is encouraging people to donate blood by offering incentives.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Blood shortages have become a pressing issue across Alabama as donations have declined and local hospitals report an increased demand for blood. LifeSouth Community Blood Centers is urging the community to donate blood to help with the shortage.

Summer poses particular challenges for blood donations, and this year is no exception. LifeSouth has declared an emergency need for blood to support patients in hospitals throughout Alabama. Places such as Huntsville Hospital, Decatur General, Athens-Limestone Medical Center, and many others rely heavily on LifeSouth and its network of blood donors to keep a steady supply of blood for patients suffering from traumas, cancers, and chronic illnesses.

During the All-American Donor Days from July 1-6, LifeSouth is encouraging individuals to donate blood by offering incentives such as a $25 e-gift card and a special t-shirt for all donors. Those donating double red cells or platelets will receive a $45 e-gift card.

LifeSouth emphasizes several ways in which people can contribute to addressing the blood shortage. Firstly, people are encouraged to make a blood donation at one of LifeSouth’s donor centers or at mobile blood drives conducted by their signature red, white, and blue buses. Secondly, the organization welcomes the support of businesses, organizations, churches, professional groups, and neighborhoods interested in hosting their own blood drives. Finally, people are encouraged to introduce new donors to the cause.

For those seeking more information about how to donate or to find a blood drive, LifeSouth provides resources through their website.
