FLORENCE, Ala. — Northern Alabama will have the chance to see a partial lunar eclipse on Tuesday! The Planetarium on the University of North Alabama campus will host a public event with telescopes for people to view and photograph the eclipse on September 17.

“A lunar eclipse happens when the full moon passes into the Earth's shadow,” explained Dr. Mel Blake, Planetarium Director and Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy. “This causes the Moon to change from a full Moon to a dark red color and back over several hours. Although this is a partial eclipse, with only part of the Moon being covered, it will still be an intriguing event.”

The partial eclipse will begin at 9:12 p.m., peak at 9:44 p.m., and finish by 10:15 p.m. You can see the eclipse from anywhere in Alabama, and you don't need any special equipment to watch it.
