Asbury High student arrested for social media threat

School officials say there was never a risk to students on-campus.

ALBERTVILLE, Ala. — An Asbury High School student was arrested Thursday, the latest in a long string of arrests, suspensions, and other repercussions taken against students who are posting threats on social media and other means.

In a statement provided to FOX54 News Thursday night, the Marshall County School System confirmed the arrest. They said that the threat was made via a social media post against the school. Law enforcement flagged the post and made the arrest. The student was removed from campus, officials said.

"Students were never at risk," they stressed.

Over the past four weeks, no fewer than 17 arrests have been made, with more students being questioned or facing some sort of disciplinary or even legal action as a result of threatening comments made on social media or in social settings.

The influx is due in part, law enforcement officials said, to people embracing the mantra "see something, say something." Jail time (which could include some time spent in a juvenile detention facility) is a real possibility for students found guilty of making terroristic threats under Alabama law.
