UNA mourns passing of lion mascot's volunteer caregiver

'Mrs. Anne,' as she was affectionately known, took care of Leo III and his twin sister Una, since they were cubs.

FLORENCE, Ala. — The longtime caretaker of the University of North Alabama's lion mascot Leo III, has died. Anne Howard was affectionately known as "Mrs. Anne" by university members, and was a staple in the George H. Carroll Lion Habitat for many years.

Howard helped facilitate the arrival of Leo and his twin sister Una to campus in 2003, shortly after they were born in New Hampshire, and gave the twins constant care and oversight.

Una died in 2020 after a brief illness, but Howard kept vigil over Leo and made sure he was properly cared for up until her passing.

"In recent years, and after the passing of her husband in 2022, former Vice President for University Advancement Dr. Dan Howard, she has worked with volunteers and local veterinarians to ensure Leo III’s ongoing health and vitality," UNA said in an official statement. "Leo III is doing well, and his care continues to be overseen by volunteers. The campus community mourns [Howard's] passing."

“It is difficult to quantify the contribution Mrs. Anne Howard made to the University of North Alabama through her volunteer service with Leo III and Una," said University President Dr. Ken Kitts. "Her presence at the George H Carroll Lion Habitat was an outward signal that she was where she wanted and needed to be as Leo III’s long-time caregiver. She will be missed. Dena and I join the campus community in mourning her passing.”

Funeral arrangements have not been announced by the university.
