Athens-Limestone Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration

Communities gathered for the annual Athens Martin Luther King Holiday Celebration where local students present contest winning essays and artwork.

ATHENS, Ala. — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was adamant about making his dream a reality. In Athens, adults and children are making sure his legacy lives on.

"If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward." That isthe  famous quote from Martin Luther King Jr., and today many in Athens are keeping that legacy alive.

The celebration was a day of prayer and unity, and many gathered at the Veterans Museum to hear Athens City and Limestone County School students present their very own MLK contest winning artwork and essays. 

One essay winner said Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. has taught her that love conquers all. "He has taught me to love others and not hate because love always wins in the end," she said. 

Another essay winner iterated we have come a long way, thanks to Martin Luther Kin,g Jr. " We have come a long way thanks to Martin Luther King stepping up to make a change."
