Arrest made in 25-year-old Decatur cold case

DECATUR, Ala. — In 1995, Decatur police to a call to investigate a deceased male. Christopher Alvin Dailey died from a single gunshot wound, and the death was determined to be a homicide.

The department says that despite an extensive investigation, a suspect was never developed in the case. In the years that followed, the case was revisited several times in search for leads.  

25 years later, a break in the case. Decatur police say that on November 18, 2020, Johnny Dwight Whited called the Decatur Police Department wanting to confess to the murder, providing information that matched the evidence and information in the case.  

Whited was arrested and charged for murder. He's being held at the Morgan County Jail in lieu of $15,000.00 bond.  

Christophe Alvin Dailey's surviving family has been notified of the arrest, 25 years after his death.

Decatur police remind the public that "the above-listed defendant is considered innocent until proven guilty in the court of law.”
